"The king of cocktails is the Old Fashioned, the pioneer of the cocktail revolution. This classic of the American cocktail industry is not losing momentum, but only continues to gain popularity, as our surveys confirm," Drinks International magazine explains the choice. For the sixth year in a row, Old Fashioned maintains a leading position.
The classic Italian cocktail celebrated its centenary in 2019 - and took second place in the Drinks International ranking. 42% of the bartenders surveyed by the publication confirmed that the Negroni is in the top 3 of their most popular cocktails, while 13% called the combination of bitters, vermouth and gin the leader of the rating.
Daiquiri retained its leadership position as the most popular rum-based cocktail. Only 6% of bartenders ranked white rum, lime juice and sugar as their number one cocktail, but almost one in two ranked it in the top ten.
Whiskey Sour, a whiskey-based cocktail, moved from third to fifth place. Drinks International admits that the recipe may vary from bar to bar ("It's a drink for everyone, not a signature cocktail"), but the first mention of it dates back to 1862 and the work of Jerry Thomas.
The most popular tequila cocktail in the rating is Margarita. Over the year, the combination of tequila, liqueur and lime has gone up a notch. Almost 10% of respondents included the cocktail in the top 3. Moreover, this year Drinks International decided to divide the classic Margarita and Tommy's Margarita from Julio Bermejo from Tommy's bar in San Francisco into two separate positions.
